Louis Cooper Rutland was a lifetime resident of Bullock County, Alabama, having been born the fourth child of Will David and Rose Rutland of Mitchell Station, Alabama. He attended school in Union Springs and graduated from Union Springs High School in 1961. He attended and graduated from Auburn University in 1963; served with the US Navy and then attained his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Alabama in 1969.

Pinky is this week’s Pet of the Week. Pinky has been at the shelter for almost a year now. She gets along great with other dogs and children. She loves to run and play. Pinky is up to date on all of her shots, including her rabies vaccination and is on flea and heartworm prevention. Pinky would make a great addition to anyone’s family.
High school senior girls from across Alabama joined together on January 14 in Montgomery for the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama program held at Frazer United Methodist Church. Participants competed for college scholarships and the opportunity to represent the state as the Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama for 2024.

The long time restaurant known as the Hilltop Grill, owned by Rebecah “Beck” Johnson, has recently been sold. Beck has managed restaurants for a number of years. She owned and managed “The Grill” for eleven years before selling it, due to health issues. Prior to Beck owning the grill, it was owned and operated by Mrs. Wylene Rhodes. In addition to Mrs. Rhodes, Beck is the hardest working woman I have known.

On Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at approximately 3:30 p.m. Union Springs Police Department and the Bullock County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shots fired call at the Sunoco Gas Station on Conecuh Avenue. The alleged subject, Jessie Haynes, III, 23, of Union Springs, fired shots at a black male who sustained an injury but was treated for his wounds at the Bullock County Hospital and released.
