Union Springs Police Department reports weekly activity

The Union Springs Police Department continues to remain active in its commitment to public safety and community service, according to a recent activity report.

During the reporting period, Sgt. Cummings responded to and handled two private property accidents. Lt. Lewis completed one accident report as part of routine departmental operations.

January brings snow once again to Bullock County

Union Springs and Bullock County residents awoke to an unusual and beautiful sight on Sunday morning, January 18, as a blanket of snow covered the area. Between the early morning hours of 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., approximately 1 to 2 inches of snow fell across the county, transforming familiar landscapes into a rare winter wonderland.

Paige Thomas brings fresh vision to Historic Preservation in Union Springs

Union Springs’ historic charm is gaining new momentum with the involvement of Paige Thomas, a preservation specialist with the Alabama Historical Commission (AHC). Thomas addressed the Union Springs City Council during its Agenda Setting meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, where she delivered an informative presentation on historic preservation programs and opportunities available to the city.

Bullock County NAACP Branch #5066 hosts Annual Freedom and Scholarship Banquet

The Bullock County NAACP Branch #5066 welcomed community leaders, elected officials, and residents on Friday, January 16, 2026, for its annual Freedom and Scholarship Banquet. Held in the auditorium of South Highlands Middle School, the event celebrated service, leadership, and achievement across Bullock County.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

Gabby arrived at the shelter on September 12, 2025, as a stray, but it didn’t take long for her loving personality to shine through. Estimated to be around 2 to 3 years old and weighing approximately 50 pounds, Gabby is a sweet, friendly shepherd mix with a gentle and affectionate nature.

Gabby is currently kenneled with another dog and gets along wonderfully with her canine companion. She does very well with other dogs and enjoys their company, making her a great fit for a home with existing pets.

Hornets win in second overtime thriller

On Friday night, January 16th, the Hornets traveled down to Andalusia for an area matchup against the Straughn High School Tigers. Bullock County took the win in the previous game versus Straughn (54-34).

It was a slow start in the first half for both teams. The Hornets were scoring in the paint with 10 points, but were missing shots and went away from the paint in the second quarter, only scoring 6 points.

Union Springs Historical Society celebrates 50 years of preservation

The Bullock County Historical Society (BCHS) celebrated a historic milestone on Sunday, January 11, 2026, marking its 50th anniversary at the Josephine Event Center in Union Springs. Members, community leaders, and guests gathered to honor five decades of dedication to preserving and promoting the rich history of Union Springs and Bullock County.

Union Springs family seeks community support after devastating house fire

In December, a devastating house fire destroyed the home of Shelly Wilson and her family on Waugh Street in Union Springs, leaving them with a total loss. The family lost everything in the fire and is now facing the difficult task of starting over from scratch.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

Butters, a Terrier mix, entered the shelter on May 24, 2023, and has been patiently waiting far too long for a family of her own. Recently, she enjoyed getting out of her kennel for photos with volunteers Jan and Jo Anna, soaking up every bit of love and attention. Friendly and gentle by nature, Butters adores people and doesn’t mind the other dogs nearby, happily showing off her calm and loving personality.
