On Father’s Day weekend an unidentified vehicle veered off County Road 14 in Smuteye, Bullock County, and plowed into New Union Grove Baptist Church. The incident caused significant damage, ruining the church’s entrance and several pews inside.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident, leaving Bullock County’s Sheriff’s deputies to investigate the hit-and-run.
Joey is still at the shelter waiting for his forever home along with his siblings, Jack and Karly! He has known nothing but shelter life, as he arrived when he was just 3 months old. Having to grow up in the shelter with his siblings isn’t the life he had hoped for. Joey is neutered; heartworm negative; up-to-date on shots, including his rabies vaccination; is dog-friendly; and absolutely loves to cuddle. He will need someone who is willing to get some training for him as he has not had any. He is still a puppy at just a year old.

The Housing and Economic Resource Summit coincided with the Bullock County Juneteenth Festival held on Saturday, June 15 at the Richard B. Stone Complex in Union Springs.
Due to the number of participants for the occasion, the class for the summit was filled to capacity with an eager audience. The summit started at 10 a.m. and continued until 3 p.m. inside the Richard B. Stone building where the audience was greeted.
Officials dedicate pollinator garden at Oak Mountain State Park to Alabama State Parks Director Greg Lein in surprise dedication
The Alabama Association of Resource, Conservation and Development (RC&D) Councils presented a $25,000 grant to Alabama State Parks on Friday, June 21, during the Pollinator Festival at Oak Mountain State Park (OMSP).
The RC&D grant will fund development of 12 pollinator gardens at state parks throughout the state.

Sheila Brooks, a member of the Bullock County Art Guild and East Alabama Black Belt Artists, is a descendant of an Alabama Native American who will be presenting the program on Native American Culture and the art of pine needle basket making at the July 14th at the Bullock County Historical Society (BCHS) program that will be held at 2 p.m at the Josephine Arts Center.

Henry Oscar Thomas Jr. was born on May 24, 1933, in Union Springs, Alabama to the late Sallie Mae and Henry Oscar, Sr. The second of nine children, Henry was affectionately known as “Buddy” by his family and friends.
The Union Springs Police Department continues to seek answers in the missing person case of Steven Bryan Peel, who has been reported missing since August of 2023. Investigators say on Sunday, August 6, 2023, Steven Bryan Peel left the area of Locke Court in Union Springs, Alabama. Peel has not been seen or heard from since.
