Wesley McKinnon sentenced to 200 years for deadly high-speed chase in Chambers County

On May 22, Wesley McKinnon received 60 years for each of the three reckless murder charges, to be served consecutively, and an additional 20 years for the other charges, totaling 200 years in Chambers County, Alabama, for his involvement in a high-speed pursuit that ended in a tragic crash, killing three people. McKinnon, age 21, had previously entered a blind guilty plea on April 30 to multiple charges stemming from the incident.

Ka’Shaad Hurts’ legacy lives on through student scholarships

Commissioner John McGowan, spokesperson for the Annual Ka’Shaad Hurts Memorial Scholarship, along with Kristy Hurts, Ka’Shaad’s aunt, presented scholarships and commemorative plaques to deserving students from South Highlands Middle School and Bullock County High School.

In celebration of Older Americans Month, the Midway Nutrition Center recognized two of its oldest and most dedicated members with a special ceremony, honoring their years of participation and commitment to the center. Each honoree received a commemorative plaque as a token of appreciation.

Earlier this May, the Alabama New South Coalition hosted its 40th Annual Spring Membership Convention at the Maggie Street Dream Center in Montgomery, Alabama. The keynote speaker for the event was U.S. Congressman Shomari Figures, representing Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District.

Faulk graduates with honors from Kennesaw State University

Rachel Faulk, a proud Bullock County native, recently graduated with honors from Kennesaw State University, earning a Bachelor's degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Family members present to celebrate her achievement included her father, the Reverend Dr. Stephen Faulk; her paternal grandmother, Mae Faulk; and her uncle, Union Springs City Councilman Eugene Faulk, who all attended the graduation ceremony.

As the school year draws to a close, the Bullock County Schools Child Nutrition Program was honored to attend the Alabama School Nutrition Association’s (ASNA) Annual State Conference, held this past May at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville—affectionately known as Rocket City.

Hormel Foods Corporation recalls canned beef stew product due to possible foreign matter contamination

Staff Reports

Washington -  Hormel Foods Corporation, a Tucker, GA establishment, is recalling approximately 256,185 pounds of canned beef stew product that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically wood, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The canned beef stew item was produced on February 4, 2025. The following product is subject to recall:

On Wednesday, May 28, the Union Springs Carnegie Public Library, in collaboration with the Bullock County Art Guild, hosted a Jughead Art Class for children as part of its ongoing “Color Your World” Summer Reading Program.
