Union Springs Police Department reports busy week

Staff Reports

The Union Springs Police Department reported an active week, handling multiple complaints, arrests, and traffic-related matters.

According to Chief Johnny L. Potts III, the department received several walk-in complaints, three of which he personally addressed. Lieutenant Lewis took four internal operations complaint reports during the week.

Students explore high-demand careers through “Be Pro, Be Proud” Alabama mobile unit

Bullock County High School recently welcomed the “Be Pro, Be Proud” Alabama Mobile Workshop to its campus, offering students a hands-on look at high-demand career opportunities. The $3 million mobile unit, housed inside a state-of-the-art semi-truck, was available to both the high school and South Highlands Middle School from August 11 through August 14. Students in grades 8 through 12 were able to participate in this unique experience.

Cornerstone Community hosts Stop the Violence Rally

The Cornerstone Community in Fitzpatrick/Bullock County, Alabama, recently hosted the “Stop the Violence 9A” Rally at the Cornerstone Recreation Center. The event, organized by Cardell Obrian and Naziree Murray, took place on Saturday, August 16, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The rally aimed to raise awareness about the impact of violence and promote peace within the community. Attendees enjoyed free food, drinks, and music while coming together for an important cause.

“Counties Really Matter” was the theme for the 97th Annual Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA) Convention, held Tuesday, August 19, through Thursday, August 21, at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Laura Lee Putnam crowned Bullock County’s Distinguished Young Woman 2025

The Bullock County Distinguished Young Women (DYW) program celebrated the accomplishments of six outstanding high school seniors during its annual scholarship competition, held on August 16 at the historic Red Door Theater in Union Springs. The event highlighted the participants’ talents, intelligence, and leadership as they competed for scholarships and the opportunity to represent the county at the state level.

Hornets thrilling comeback in season opener

Friday, August 22, was the start of the Jeremy Vines coaching era for Bullock County Football. Last season, Vines guided the Hornets to the playoffs and is looking to do so again in the 2025 season. The first opponent of the year was the Panthers of Lanett High School. This opener is the first of three home games to begin the Hornets’ season.

Bullock County Humane Society pet of the week!

Ginger, a beautiful Husky mix, has been at the Bullock County Humane Society for over two years and is still waiting for her perfect home. This energetic and affectionate young dog has won the hearts of the shelter staff with her sweet personality and playful spirit.

Ginger is well-socialized and loves the company of other dogs. In fact, she’s often used as the “test dog” to see how new arrivals interact with others because of her friendly and calm nature.

Bullock County farmers attend Beef Cattle Workshop at McCants Farm

Several farmers from Bullock County and surrounding areas recently traveled to Talbotton, Georgia, to attend a Beef Cattle Workshop at the McCants Farm. The event, organized by the Tuskegee University Extension Program, provided participants with valuable insights into the beef cattle industry. Extension agents from Tuskegee were also in attendance to learn and share knowledge with local farmers.

Two nights, one goal: candidates pitch plans for the future of Union Springs, Midway

The Candidates for Union Springs Mayor and City Council were invited to two Meet the Candidates Forums. The first forum was held on August 10, at 3:00 p.m. by the Bullock County Branch of the NAACP#5066, which was also streamed live on Facebook, and the second was held on August 17, at 5:00 p.m. by the Bullock County Voters’ League.

While most candidates were present for the first meeting, not all were present for the second.

Bullock County Art Guild discusses future, elects new treasurer

The Bullock County Art Guild held its monthly meeting on Thursday, August 7, at noon at the Josephine Art Café. Members addressed several important topics, including leadership, the future of the Guild, and potential community involvement in local schools.
