Despite one of the hottest heat waves South Alabama has experienced in years, more than 300 parents and students gathered for the Annual Youth Summit hosted by Children and Mentors Outdoors (CAMO), Unique Achievers, and Community at Large on Tuesday, July 28.

The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was held on Monday, August 3, at Conecuh Springs Christian School (CSCS), bringing community members together for a morning of prayer, fellowship, and reflection. The theme for this month’s breakfast was, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another.” — Genesis 31:49, KJV.

Children attending the Union Springs Public Library's Summer Reading Program had the opportunity to learn about electricity in a fun and interactive way when Alabama Power brought its popular "Touch a Truck" program to Union Springs on Friday, July 31.
The educational program was led by Rod Cater, Community Relations Manager for Alabama Power, along with Area Manager Anita Archie, Lineman Justin Johnson, and Apprentice Lineman Brent Painter, all from the company's Southern Division.
The Bullock County Humane Society is searching for a loving forever home for Captain Morgan, an energetic young dog who has spent the past year waiting for someone to give her a second chance.
Approximately 1½ years old, Captain Morgan is a black-and-white terrier mix weighing about 35 pounds. She has been spayed, is full of energy, and enjoys spending time outdoors where she can run and play.

The Bullock County Schools Child Nutrition Program concluded its 2026 Summer Food Service Program after serving more than 135,000 nutritious meals to children across Bullock County during the summer months.

The Union Springs Police Department continues to work diligently to keep the streets of Union Springs safe and protect the community. Officers remained active throughout the past week, responding to calls, making arrests, issuing citations, and handling reports. According to the department’s weekly report, Sgt. Cummings made one arrest during the week. Jordan King was arrested for harassment. Sgt. Cummings also issued one citation.

Bonnie Plants Farm, one of the most prominent plant businesses in the United States, which began in Union Springs, has lost one of its original pioneers. James “Bubba” Pope passed away on June 18, 2026, in Maryville, Tennessee. Bubba was the first Bonnie Plant Farm man to venture into that part of the country; I think it was some time in the early sixties. That means he was there for well over 60 years. Bubba was 85 years old and was a major cog until the very end.
