On Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Nate’s Oyster Bar in Slocumb, Alabama, the Alabama Democratic Conference held their second Congressional district meeting. Attending from Bullock County were the Chairman of the Bullock County Democratic Executive Committee, Danny Jackson, Vice-Chairperson, Mary King and Probate Judge, James E. Tatum.

Some of the presenters were Elder Rufus Lee, Chairman of the Geneva County Alabama Democratic Conference, Dr. Earl C. Jones, Chairman of the 2nd congressional district, Alabama Democratic Conference and Chairman Joe L. Reed, Alabama Democratic Conference State Chairman.

Dr. Reed mentioned about having a positive message and a defined vision to make a difference and impact government. He also discussed redistricting. Dr. Reed thinks that ultimately the United States Supreme Court will draw the two minority congressional districts.

He also spoke about the many achievements of Alabama Democratic Conference since the 1960s and the significance of being a member of this historic organization. For decades, the Alabama Democratic Conference has been involved in drawing redistricting maps for the state which resulted in Alabama having more African American elected officials than any other state in the United States of America.

Lastly, he referenced how the Alabama Democratic Conference worked with President Jimmy Carter and Senator Howard Heflin to appoint minority judges to the federal bench in the state of Alabama which led to the appointment of Judge U. W. Clemon and Judge Myron H. Thompson.

Dr. Reed also paid tribute to Nathan Mathis as an advocate for civil rights and human rights. Mr. Mathis served in the Alabama House of Representative as a democrat for over a decade.
