Puppy Season is here! March 23 was National Puppy Day, however, you can celebrate National Puppy Day on any day of the year. This holiday was established in 2006 and is a day meant for all puppy enthusiasts to celebrate unconditional love and fawn over their absolute cuteness.
This holiday was also designed to raise awareness about puppy mills and help prospective pet owners consider adoption. The founder, Colleen Paige, had a mission to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.
The Bullock County Humane Society (BCHS) has many dogs who came into the shelter as unwanted, abandoned, or dumped puppies. The BCHS treats each animal with loving care and makes sure they receive the medical attention needed for potential adoption. From January until May, it is considered “Puppy Season.” Why, you may ask? Well, because of the amount of, not just puppies, but pregnant mama dogs, that get either dumped out in the county while pregnant due to their owners negligence, or brought to the shelter because their owner cannot handle them. The BCHS is prepared to take in those mama dogs and puppies that are unwanted for whatever the reason.
“Please do not be afraid to bring your pregnant mama dogs, mama dogs with puppies, or puppies to the shelter. They can be dropped off with the shelter workers and taken care of properly instead of being forced to fend for themselves with no food or water and left to starve to death. If you're unsure of how to care for your animal, BCHS volunteers can give you the 4-1-1 on all puppy care or mama care. Please don’t hesitate to call 334-738-7387 if you need more information,” stated a volunteer at BCHS.
