Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday in May. This holiday honors the men and women who never came home while serving in the United States military. This year it was held May 27.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, having originated in the years after the Civil War. It became a federal holiday in 1971, and many Americans observe this holiday by visiting memorials, cemeteries, having family gatherings or participating in parades.
