A tribute to an extraordinary man

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Joe C. Harris, a cherished member of the Bullock County Extension Office family. Though a man of few words, his impact was profound and far-reaching. Mr. Harris served as a 4-H Assistant Agent, dedicating his efforts to the growth and development of our youth across local public and private schools.

USES 2023-2024 Kindergarten Class publishes book

Graduates of Union Springs Elementary School’s 2023-24 Kindergarten classes taught by Ms. Andrea Surles and Mrs. Adams-King, illustrated and published their very own book entitled, Who’s on the Farm?

In the book, the children tell readers about what animals are on the farm. Each entry is illustrated with the student’s idea of what the animal looks like. The little authors and illustrators also autographed the back of the book.

Gaston’s relatives inducted into Hall of Fame

Faye Gaston of Union Springs announced the induction of her brother Rendall Eugene Barfoot and wife, Neva Lee (Hicks), of Dothan into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for being married 65 years or more. The 2024 Induction and Awards Ceremony was held on August 11 in the Marriott Conference Center in Prattville to accommodate the 85 inductees in five categories and the large crowd of their friends and families.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the week!

The Bullock County Humane Society is offering a “Barn Cat Special!” From now until October 1 we will offer three barn kitties (only our best hunter-mousers) for a discounted $50. These are kitties that prefer to spend most of their days and nights out in the “catio” watching and waiting for any movement.

Teacher Tuesday implemented in Bullock County Schools

Teacher Tuesday is off to a great start thanks to Superintendent Sean Dees and Dorsey Fayson, the District Wellness Coordinator. Each Tuesday of the week, two teachers and a student from each school in the district will be highlighted for their outstanding achievement, commitment, and dedication.

This week’s highlights come from Union Springs Elementary School. Dr. Derrick Hurt and Tara Marlow were nominated this week for Teacher Tuesday.

Former Bullock County teacher arrested

Partia Sanchez Youngblood, a former Bullock County school teacher, was arrested on August 16 for shoplifting. According to an anonymous source, Youngblood had been working in the money center at the Walmart on Atlanta Highway in Montgomery and was allegedly stealing money from the store.

Trespassers/Contraband suspects arrested by ADOC K9 officers at Bullock Correctional Facility

The Alabama Department of Corrections Easterling and Ventress K-9 Units  located and detained two trespassers on state property at Bullock Correctional Facility on Monday, August 19. While tracking the trespassers, agents recovered contraband hidden in a potato chip can.

Suspects Xavionn Ahmod Truss and Terrance Rontae Green were arrested and placed in the Bullock County Jail. They have been charged with Promoting Prison Contraband I.

Truss, 24 years old, is from Oxford and Green, 20 years old, is from Talladega.

BloodMobile spotted in front of City Hall

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers’ van was set up in downtown Union Springs on Friday, August 16 in front of City Hall. LifeSouth, whose mission is to provide a safe blood supply that meets or exceeds the needs in each community they serve and to provide a variety of services in support of ongoing and emerging blood and transfusion-related activities, travels from destination to destination allowing donors the flexibility and convenience of donating in the van or “BloodMobile” instead of in the office.
