The Chunnenuggee Garden Club, nationally recognized as the first garden club in the United States, has had a busy and productive month of May as members continued their efforts to beautify and maintain several locations throughout the community.
Friday, a sweet and affectionate dog currently housed at the Bullock County Humane Society, is still searching for her forever home after spending more than two years at the shelter. Friday has been at the shelter since December 22, 2023, and despite her loving personality, shelter staff says she has received zero inquiries from potential adopters.
Steven Peel disappeared from Union Springs in August 2023.
He was last seen in the Locke Court area wearing jeans and an unknown shirt. Since his disappearance, there has been little information about where he may have gone or what happened after he was last seen on August 5, 2023.
When someone vanishes without explanation, families are left replaying the final moments over and over, hoping for the one detail that changes everything.

The Union Springs Police Department responded to a serious single-vehicle accident on Peachburg Road at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5.
According to a witness at the scene, the driver of a red pickup truck was traveling erratically before reportedly overcorrecting, causing the vehicle to flip into the air. The truck overturned before ultimately coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, of Midway, was reportedly vandalized sometime after services concluded on Sunday, May 10, Mother’s Day.
According to reports, a brick was thrown through the church’s front window, allowing the perpetrator or perpetrators to gain entry into the building. Commissioner Don Larkins later replaced the damaged window.

Commission Chairman Alonza Ellis, Jr. hosted the 2026 Older Americans Month event on Friday, May 8, at the Richard B. Stone Armory in Union Springs. The program was held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and brought together local seniors and community leaders for a morning of recognition, fellowship, and encouragement.
The Bullock County Humane Society is urgently seeking a loving home or foster placement for Raggedy, a young dog currently experiencing kennel stress while staying at the shelter.
Raggedy arrived at the shelter on July 1, 2024, and staff members say he is a sweet and affectionate dog who would thrive in a caring environment. According to the shelter, Raggedy has begun constantly licking his kennel, which can be a sign of stress caused by long-term shelter living.

The Bullock County Art Guild held its monthly meeting on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at noon at the Josephine Event Center in Union Springs. Members in attendance included President Joyce Perrin, Vice President Larry Stewart, Secretary Linda Reynolds, Treasurer Sheila Brooks, member Walt Spratlan, and new member Lynn Bradley.
