Bullock County holds 31st Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Bullock County joined communities across the nation in honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The 31st Annual Bullock County Veterans Day Ceremony was held Tuesday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the Richard B. Stone Complex.

The program was presented by American Legion Post 2016, Bell Cook-Hopson Auxiliary Unit #337, Bullock County Extension, and the Tourism Council of Bullock County.

Quiet afternoon turns tragic as fire devours home

The Union Springs Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a structure fire at a residence on Waugh Street on Sunday afternoon. The call came in at approximately 2:20 p.m., and when fire crews arrived, the home was already fully engulfed in flames.

Bullock County Rescue aids hunter after tree stand fall

Bullock County Rescue responded to an emergency call from the Bullock County Sheriff’s Department to County Road 34 in Midway to assist Haynes Ambulance with a medical emergency involving a hunter who had fallen approximately 15 feet from his tree stand.

Bullock County Art Guild members aim to bring art education back to local schools

The Bullock County Art Guild held its monthly meeting on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at The Josephine Art Center, beginning at 12:08 p.m. Six members were in attendance.

Guild President Linda Reynolds opened the meeting, and Sheila Brooks, Treasurer, presented the monthly financial report. Because last month’s gathering was held at Reynolds’ home for a Plein Air art event, there were no official minutes to approve, and the group moved directly into old business.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

Meet Shadow, a beautiful black and tan Shepherd/Lab mix who is just a little over a year old. She arrived at the Bullock County Humane Society on April 16 and currently weighs 44 pounds. She is a bit underweight, but we are helping her get back to a healthy size.

Mayor Roderick Clark concludes term, passes leadership to Mayor-Elect Ronald Smith

Union Springs City Mayor Roderick Clark officially concluded his term on November 3, 2025, passing the reins of leadership to Mayor-Elect Ronald Smith during the City Council meeting.

During his five years in office, Mayor Clark and his administration accomplished numerous milestones that have left a lasting impact on the community. Among his achievements, Clark oversaw the construction of the city’s first-ever council-built facility, the Union Springs Community Center on March Street.

Union Springs City Council welcomes new leadership during Swearing-In Ceremony

The Union Springs City Council meeting, held at 6:00 p.m. in the courthouse basement on Tuesday, November 3, 2025, drew a standing-room-only crowd as residents gathered to witness the swearing-in of the city’s newly elected mayor and council members.

Armed robbery reported at Greenway Express Citgo

According to Union Springs Police Chief Johnny L. Potts III, an armed robbery occurred at the Greenway Express Citgo gas station on Tuesday, October 28, around 9:30 p.m.

Chief Potts stated that a single male suspect entered the store and robbed it at gunpoint, taking approximately $400 in cash. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.

This year’s theme for Veterans Day 2025 is “Service to our Nation”

Veterans Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated on November 11, dedicated to honoring veterans and active military members.

Its origin began in 1918, marking the end of the First World War. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and became a federal holiday in 1938.

Union Springs Police tackle variety of calls across the city

The Union Springs Police Department had an active week, working diligently to keep the community safe and peaceful.

According to Chief Johnny L. Potts, III, the department responded to multiple incidents and handled a variety of cases across the city. Chief Potts himself filed two reports during the week.
