February is Black History Month and in Alabama, it is a time of reflection, education, and celebration of the rich contributions of African Americans to the state's history and culture. As a state deeply intertwined with the Civil Rights Movement, Alabama plays a significant role in honoring Black heritage and the ongoing struggle for equality.

NLC– Louis Murry, City Council of Union Springs, Alabama, has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2025 Small Cities Council. Council Member Murry was elected to a one-year term to develop and guide programs among local elected officials from similar communities. The appointment was announced by NLC President Steve Patterson, mayor of Athens, Ohio.

Midway – The spirit and knowledge of Midway Mayor Mildred Whittington make her an unstoppable force. A fall in September of 2023 left her with a broken neck in four places and as a quadriplegic, but her first instinct was not to quit.

Students at Conecuh Springs Christian School participated in celebrating 100 days of school! Students throughout the school dressed as older people, created t-shirts for the occasion, or wore crowns with the number 100 on them, as shown in one of the photos. The students are now 100 days smarter!

Union Springs Elementary School Winter Wonderland Family Math and Literacy Night is an annual event held once a year. This year it was held on Thursday, January 30, to provide parents and students with important updates regarding the Alabama Numeracy and Literacy Act as it pertains to students in the second, third, and fourth grades. The event is hosted by the school-based reading coach, Theresa Willams, and school-based math coach, Willonda Anderson Caffie.

The Union Springs Carnegie Public Library is in full swing for Black History Month and Valentine's Day! This month the library will hold two special readings in honor of Black History Month. On Thursday, Feb. 13 a Black History Month reading will be done by Sandra Richards at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. On Monday, February 24 a special presentation of Timpie Thrasher- Born 1864- Slave by Mr. and Mrs. Rozell Swanson at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
Shadow came to the shelter as an abuse case starved and chained on a four feet leash. He weighed an alarming 23.5 pounds! But just Look at Shadow now! He’s looking great with that weight on him! He’s a loving, sweet guy who just wants to show you how grateful he is to be off the chain! Shadow has been neutered. He is up to date on all of his shots. He is on flea and heartworm prevention. He is heartworm-negative and ready to go to his forever home. He’s also dog-friendly!

As the Bullock County School System closed its doors for the four unavoidable snow days, children and parents took to the snow and had a winter blast. Several of the youngsters and their family members saw snow and some created snow angels and snowmen for the first time in their lives.

As the snow fell over Union Springs and Bullock County, it caused havoc on county roads and highways.
“The south isn’t equipped for this type of weather. I’m sure the Alabama Department of Transportation is doing all they can with sand, but the roads are in no condition for traveling,” stated Sergeant Grooms of the Bullock County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Rodgers warned, “If you don’t have an emergency, please stay home.”
