Union Springs Herald earns honors at 2025 Alabama Press Association Media Awards

The Union Springs Herald has proudly brought home four awards from the 2025 Alabama Press Association (APA) Media Awards, announced during the annual APA Summer Convention banquet. Dee Ann Campbell, chairman of the APA Contest Committee, released the results following judging conducted by members of the Michigan Press Association.

Union Springs City Council hires new police officer to strengthen local force

The Union Springs City Council held a specially called meeting on Tuesday, June 24, at 6:00 p.m., led by Mayor Roderick Clark. Council members in attendance included Louis Murry, Stanley Cooks, and Eugene Faulk, along with City Clerk and Treasurer Terronda Hooks.

Y.C. Nance Sports Foundation hosts successful smoker raffle to support local programs

The Y.C. Nance Sports Foundation recently held a raffle for a brand new barbecue smoker at the Bullock County Extension Office, located in the Richard B. Stone Complex.

The fundraiser brought in generous donations totaling $1,330. All proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the playground and the after-school program at South Highlands Middle School.

“Thank you very much for your donations and for participating in the event,” said Judge James Tatum, President of the Foundation.

Historical Society to celebrate the Chunnenuggee Garden Club, America’s oldest, at July meeting

The Bullock County Historical Society (BCHS) will hold its quarterly meeting on Sunday, July 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Union Springs Presbyterian Church, located at 205 Hardaway Avenue East. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The Bullock County Extension Office was abuzz with energy and purpose on Friday, June 27, as it hosted the Safe Sleep Community Baby Shower, an uplifting event designed to support expecting mothers and new parents with infants up to six months old.

Truck fire temporarily disrupts traffic on Highway 82 near Midway

On Monday, June 23, a truck traveling northwest on U.S. Highway 82, just past Midway, caught fire under the hood, eventually becoming fully engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the driver was able to exit the vehicle safely before the fire spread.

The incident caused temporary traffic delays along the two-lane highway as emergency responders worked to manage the scene.

Bullock County Humane Society pet of the week!

Clover and her sister Butters arrived at the Bullock County Humane Society well over a year ago, and sadly, they’re still waiting for someone to notice them. Despite their sweet personalities and love for people, no adoption inquiries have come in for these two affectionate girls.
