Auburn University — Alabama is home to a variety of snakes, including six venomous species. The copperhead and cottonmouth are the most encountered of the venomous snake species throughout the state. Understanding their differences, similarities, and behaviors can help residents appreciate the vital roles these snakes play in the ecosystem.
A loving dog at the Bullock County Humane Society is still waiting for the day someone chooses her as part of their family.
Shelby, a sweet, silly, and submissive mixed-breed dog, marked two years in the shelter in December and continues to patiently wait for a forever home. According to shelter volunteers, Shelby’s gentle personality and affectionate nature make her an ideal companion for anyone looking for a loyal friend.

The Bullock County Historical Society, in partnership with the Tourism Council and the Chamber of Commerce, will sponsor a “Front Porch Parade” patriotic decorating contest for homes and businesses. The idea for the contest was inspired by Laura Lee Putnam, winner of the 250th American Celebration Essay Contest in May, presenting Conecuh Springs Christian School.

In recognition of America’s 250th anniversary on July 4, Dr. William Sauser, minister at the Union Springs Presbyterian Church, delivered his Sunday Patriotic sermon dressed in period clothing, portraying a Carolina Scot-Irish Presbyterian minister who served in the Volunteer Colonial Militia.
Dr. Sauser noted that many Presbyterian ministers joined the fight for independence, serving alongside others as soldiers during the Revolutionary War.
