Ka’Shaad Hurts Scholarship Foundation gives back to kick off school year

The Ka’Shaad Hurts Memorial Scholarship Foundation will host its 11th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway on Saturday, August 9, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at 305 Chunnenuggee Avenue in Union Springs.

This year’s giveaways will include personal hygiene bags for boys and girls ages 12 and older, several gift cards, and a special drawing for 10 cash prizes of $100 each. Winners must be present to claim their cash prize if their name is drawn.

Union Springs Police Department reports busy week and welcomes new officers

Union Springs Police Chief Johnny L. Potts, III, along with his officers, experienced a notably active week in law enforcement activities.

Chief Potts personally served a warrant for harassment on Tarshay Tolbert and filed five incident or complaint reports. Sergeant Cummings served three warrants against LaTonya Hoyle on charges including reckless endangerment, menacing, and harassment.

Jones Chapel A.M.E. Church in Clayton, Alabama, held a momentous Historical Landmark Celebration Program on Sunday, June 27. The theme, “Honoring Our Past, Embracing Our Legacy,” set the tone for a day dedicated to reflecting on the church’s rich history and enduring legacy.

Historic Kappa Delta Chapter in Union Springs honored at national convention

Dallas, Texas, served as the host city for the Kappa Delta National Convention in June 2025, where nearly 1,000 members from across the country gathered to celebrate sisterhood and service. Among those in attendance was Mona Pritchett, representing the Union Springs Alumnae Chapter. During the event, Pritchett proudly accepted an award of recognition on behalf of the chapter for its outstanding contributions to the national organization.

Bullock County Humane Society pet of the week!

This sweet girl is Queen, and sadly, she holds the title of the longest resident at the Bullock County Humane Society. Queen has been at the shelter for nearly three years without receiving any serious interest.

Queen is a playful and social pup who loves being around other dogs. She enjoys running, playing, and also has a calm, snuggly side when it’s time to relax. She is fully up to date on her vaccinations, heartworm negative, and currently on both flea and heartworm preventatives.

The Union Springs Police Department maintained a strong presence in the community over the past week, with officers responding to numerous calls and making several arrests. Police Chief Johnny L. Potts III praised his team for their dedicated work and ongoing efforts to keep the city safe.

Bullock County Humane Society pet of the week!

Shadow has been at the Bullock County Humane Society for over a year with little interest, but he’s more than ready to find his forever home.

When Shadow first arrived, he was rescued from an abuse situation, chained with only a 4-foot leash, and severely underweight at just 23.5 pounds. But look at him now! Thanks to lots of love and care, Shadow has filled out beautifully and is thriving.

Tuck Foundation continues to make a difference with annual Backpack Blessings giveaway

The Tuck Foundation continued its mission to uplift and support local students by hosting its annual Backpack Blessings giveaway on Tuesday, July 15, at the Union Springs Recreation Center. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., families gathered to receive free school supplies as part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to invest in the next generation.

A legacy of love: 3rd Annual Back-to-School Giveaway honors Hope Thomas

Hope Trucking held its 3rd Annual Back-to-School Giveaway on Saturday, July 19, continuing a heartfelt tradition in honor of Hope Thomas, who passed away in June 2023 due to surgical complications. Organized by her brother, Jaderion Thomas, and their large, close-knit family, the event is both a tribute to Hope’s memory and a way to give back to the community she loved.
