Benton in custody for Burglary

On April 22, 2024, the Union Springs Police Department requested public assistance with locating fugitive, David Lamar Benton Jr., 19.

Benton Jr. was originally wanted for burglary 3 rd degree and theft of property 1st degree by the Union Springs Police Department.

Investigators say Benton Jr. was wanted for his involvement in a burglary that occurred last year on March 27, 2023, in the 100 block of Highway 29 North, Union Springs, Alabama.

Triple tragedy: April claims lives at Bullock County Correctional Facility

Staff Reports

Within a matter of ten days, not even two weeks time, three inmates at the Bullock County Correctional Facility died this past month.

Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) stated that Clifton Leon King, who was serving a life sentence for a murder in Montgomery County, was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday, April 14. Medical staff administered care but were unable to resuscitate King and he was pronounced deceased by the attending physician.

A pot-hole stops traffic on Highway 223

On Wednesday, April 24, due to a water-line break, a pot-hole measuring approximately two feet long, a foot and a half wide, and a foot deep opened on Highway 223 adjacent to the Budget Inn stopping traffic. McDonald’s Construction along Clear Water Solutions was on the scene to direct traffic and find a solution to the problem. By the end of the day the road was patched and traffic was back to normal. Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

Introducing Bullock! A bouncy, energetic boy who enjoys time out of his kennel running around! Bullock was picked up near the grounds of the prison in Bullock County by a law enforcement officer in the summer of 2023, not far from the Shelter. He is a sweet dog.

Bullock came into the shelter and stayed with office staff in the cat room and was glad to get water and food. He gets along with people and other dogs, Bullock is not moved one way or the other by cats and loves to play with kids.

Palmer Becomes a SUCC Bison

April 23, 2024 will forever be a day that Trevone Palmer will remember. At 9 A.M. in the Bullock County High School (BCHS) gymnasium dozens of supporters from family, friends, classmates, teachers, coaches and teammates all came out to witness the National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing of Palmer. He has  officially signed to Southern Union Community College (SUCC) making him a new Bison.

White Lightning was as a hit at the Red Door Theater

Not an empty seat was to be found on the nights of April 18th through 21st, 2024, at the Red Door Theater. The theatrical phenomenon the audience witnessed was none other than the production of White Lightning. Written by Alabamian Elyzabeth Wilder and directed by Kim Mason, the audience raced down red dirt roads through a country night of fast cars and moonshine. A young veteran with a checkered past and ‘39 Ford makes a name for himself outrunning the law.
