Fire destroys home of resident during Sunday church service

On Sunday morning, October 26, tragedy struck when the home of 86-year-old Calvin Pruett was engulfed in flames while he was attending Morning Star Baptist Church in the Newtown community. The 911 call came in to dispatch at 10:50 a.m., and by 10:51 a.m., local firefighters, who happened to be conducting training exercises just down the road, were already on the scene.

Over $110,000 in grant funds dispersed throughout Bullock County

News Release

For FY25, the Mid-South RC&D Council recently awarded $110,258.39 across ten different organizations to support projects that improve the quality of life for the county. On Wednesday, October 14, Senator Billy Beasley, Representative Berry Forte, and Mid-South RC&D visited with representatives of the recipient organizations to learn about how these projects have positively impacted lives.

SNAP benefits at risk amid federal shutdown: Bullock County residents urged to prepare

As the federal government shutdown drags on, residents of Bullock County reliant on SNAP benefits face growing uncertainty. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has warned that it will not tap into its contingency funds to continue issuing regular SNAP payments during this lapse in funding. In more than 40 million households nationwide, benefits may be delayed or halted entirely if the impasse persists.

Close call in Cleburne

After suffering a 25-18 loss in the season to Booker T.  Washington (Tuskegee), the Hornets were looking to make sure they redeem themselves. Bullock County traveled to Cleburne County to face the Tigers. The Tigers just came off a win versus Munford High School for their third win of the season.

Bullock County Chief Clerk attends statewide Tag Clerks Workshop

Elaine Tarver, Chief Clerk of the Bullock County Office of the Judge of Probate, recently attended a Tag Clerks Workshop hosted by Ingenuity, Inc. The event was held at the South Alabama Electric Cooperative in Troy, Alabama, and brought together clerks and licensing officials from across the state.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

Diamond has been patiently waiting at the Bullock County Humane Society since June 28, 2022, and staff can’t understand why no one has chosen her yet. She’s such a loving and gentle girl!

This beautiful dog thrives on attention and affection, though she doesn’t get much of it at the shelter. Whenever volunteers visit, she lights up with excitement and joy. Unfortunately, volunteer visits are rare, but Diamond treasures every moment of human interaction. She truly has so much love to give.
