Public ceremony set for 7:30 a.m. Friday at Union Springs City Hall

The City of Union Springs will hold a short public remembrance on Friday, September 11, marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. in front of City Hall, 212 North Prairie Street, in downtown Union Springs. This is a free event, open to every resident. Folding chairs will be limited; the public is encouraged to bring a chair.
The program will include the presentation of colors, the National Anthem, which will be sung by a local student, the Pledge of Allegiance, brief remarks by Mayor Ron Smith and city first responders, and a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. CST, corresponding to 8:46 a.m. EST in New York, when the first plane struck the World Trade Center.
“We are a small city, but this is still our country’s anniversary to never forget,” said City Councilman Stan “Chilly” Cooks, who is organizing the observance for the Council. “We want our neighbors, our children, and our first responders to stand together for a few quiet minutes and remember the lives that were taken and the courage that answered them.”
Flags at City Hall will fly at half-staff. The community is asked to dress respectfully and to arrive by 7:20 a.m. In the event of lightning, the gathering will move to nearby cover, and the 7:46 a.m. silence will still be observed.
The September 11, 2001 attacks killed 2,977 people in New York, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, including 343 New York firefighters. Thousands more have since died from 9/11-related illness.
