Rosalynn Carter, an advocate for change

On Sunday, November 19, 2023, the world lost a valuable treasure.  Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter died peacefully in her Plains, Georgia home. She was 96.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Former First Lady and Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, when I traveled to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, GA one picturesque Sunday morning on July 10, 2011 to attend service.

Bell Ringers are needed in Union Springs!

Every year at Christmas time you see them at the fronts of businesses ringing the bells. This tradition started in 1900 when a teenage volunteer, Amelia Kunkel,  in New York City was fed up with the many bankers on Wall Street who walked by and ignored her. She decided she would buy a small bell from Woolworth’s department store for ten cents and the rest is history. Her thoughtfulness is what started the red kettle program and it has been going strong ever since.

Warriors’ defense gave Hornets offensive woes

On Friday, December 1, 2023, the Hornets traveled to Russel County to face the Warriors of Russell County High School. The Hornets attempted to break a two-game losing streak they suffered against Valley High School (69-42 and 68-52). Russel County was coming off a win against Booker T. Washington (Tuskegee) Golden Eagles (66-48).

Paving Project underway in District 2

The Bullock County Commission has secured a grant for  $400,000  from ADECA Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to pave roads in the Ponderosa Community and other nearby areas. The Ponderosa is set to undergo a transformative makeover, smoother roads and enhanced connectivity are on the horizon, thanks to our collective dedication.

Family Dollar / Dollar Tree now open

The new Family Dollar Dollar Tree store is now open to the public. The store celebrated their grand opening on December 2, 2023.  The new store is located at 110 Baskin Street across from Ryan’s Fish and Wings. The store hours are Sunday through Saturday 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. This new store will make a great addition to the ever growing Union Springs.
