The streets of downtown Union Springs were filled with excitement and pride on the evening of Wednesday, May 7, as citizens of Bullock County gathered to celebrate one of their own—Devonta Davis—who recently signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

Associated Grocers awards 2025 Scholarships

For the past eight years, Edwin Lewis, owner of Associated Grocers, also known as AG, in Union Springs, and his wife, Gwen, have gone beyond simply offering high school students part-time jobs. They’ve provided them with meaningful real-world experiences and, for graduating seniors, a special scholarship to help launch the next chapter of their lives. These scholarships can be used not only for college but for any personal or professional needs as students move forward.

High-speed chase ends in fatal officer-involved shooting

Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting involving a Trooper assigned to ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.

Bullock County Humane Society pet of the week!

This black beauty is Marla, a young, sweet girl who would love to have a soft bed to sleep on in a loving home. She is dog-friendly and good with children.  Marla is up to date on her shots, including her rabies vaccination. She is currently on a flea and heartworm preventative and is heartworm negative. She has also been spayed. She is patiently waiting for her forever family to adopt her.

Hornets rise over the Phoenixes

On Thursday, May 8, the Hornets' football team traveled to Troy for this year's Spring Game against the Percy Julian Phoenix. This is the second consecutive year that Bullock County has participated in this showcase. This year was a different format compared to last season. It was a full scrimmage game, facing one opponent instead of facing two squads for two quarters each.

Neekra Swanson fulfills lifelong dream of becoming registered nurse

From a young age, Neekra Swanson knew she was destined to become a nurse. Her journey began in August 2017, when she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification from Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama.

“I maintained my faith and put God first throughout it all, demonstrating that everything is achievable with commitment and trust,” Swanson said. Quoting Maya Angelou, she added, “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”

Bullock County High School celebrates National College Signing Day

May 1 is recognized nationally as College Signing Day, and Bullock County High School proudly celebrated this tradition as seven seniors signed letters of intent with the colleges or military branches of their choice. The event was held in the old gymnasium, where sophomores and juniors gathered to witness and support their peers’ accomplishments.

Partnership aims to make Bullock County schools more walkable and safe

On Thursday, May 1, Bullock County Extension, partnered with the Thriving Communities team, comprised of experts from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Auburn University, to bring their team to South Highlands Middle School. The visit was part of a collaborative effort to explore ways to promote walking and biking within the Union Springs community with a Walkability Study.
