It is almost time for the high school football season to start and action on the gridiron. With players and coaches preparing all summer long, teams are almost ready for 10 weeks of battle. Before the premiere of the 2026 football season and the beginning of the Clayton Harris Jr. era, the Bullock County Hornets have a dress rehearsal with a jamboree game versus the Tallassee High School Tigers.

Union Springs and Bullock County have experienced a heartbreaking series of deaths attributed to gun violence in recent years. The community continues to mourn the loss of loved ones, with the most recent being Olajuwon Dixson, who was shot following an evening of celebration with his wife. Dixson was placed in intensive care following the shooting but died several days later from his injuries.

The Union Springs Police Department continues its efforts to keep the peace and help maintain safety throughout the community. Officers handled several investigations, arrests, and citations during the latest reporting period.

The Bullock County Alabama Cooperative Extension System hosted a special back-to-school event at Union Springs Elementary School on August 6. The event brought together men from a variety of professions and leadership roles throughout Bullock County to welcome students on their first day of school.

The Bullock County Art Guild met Thursday, August 6, at noon at the Josephine Event Center, with members Larry Stewart, Linda Reynolds, Walt Spratlan, Lynn Brantley, Sharon Harper, Joyce Perrin and Sheila Brooks in attendance. During the meeting, members continued making plans for their participation in the upcoming Pike Road Art Festival, scheduled for November 7, 2026.
The Bullock County Humane Society is hoping to find a loving forever home for Dutchess, a sweet, affectionate dog who has been waiting far too long for her chance at a family.

As students prepare to return to the classroom, teachers across Bullock County have been hard at work transforming their learning spaces into engaging environments designed to spark curiosity and excitement. At Union Springs Elementary School, first-grade teacher Rhonda Anthony, who has taught in Bullock County Schools for twenty years, has once again embraced the challenge by creating a classroom that is both fun and meaningful.

Women on Mission (WOM) gathered at the Josephine Art Center on Tuesday, August 2, for a special community service project designed to spread encouragement throughout the local community.
Eleven members came together to create, design, and paint “inspirational rocks” featuring Bible verses, words of encouragement, and small inspirational pictures. The finished rocks were then shared throughout the community with the hope of lifting the spirits of those who found them.
