Bullock County youth receives Poarch Band of Creek Indians Scholarship

Levi Newsome, Union Springs, was awarded a scholarship by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI) for his participation in Alabama’s livestock industry Saturday, March 19 at a ceremony held in coordination with the Southeastern Livestock Exposition (SLE) Rodeo.

The PBCI has a proud history of supporting youth in livestock. Each year, young people from each of Alabama’s 67 counties are awarded scholarships from the Tribe to aid in future participation in youth livestock events or further education during SLE Livestock Week.

Newsome was the only one chosen to represent Bullock County. He was nominated by Bullock County Cattlemen’s Association Secretary / Treasurer, Ms. Megan Foose, for his work with the animals within his 4-H group, as well as, when he helps volunteer at the Bullock County Humane Society, where Foose is also a Board Member.

Newsome loves animals and has taken an interest in raising chickens for his 4-H group. He has also taken a liking to the sport of Archery, which is also done through 4-H. When asked what his plans were for his scholarship money, he replied,” I’m going to use the money to take care of my chickens for 4-H. I have a coupe but I need food, nesting boxes, and good sand or cedar chips for the floor of my coupe.” Newsome’s future 4-H endeavors will include raising a bottle-fed calf to be shown in a 4-H competition.
