National Dog Day: A perfect day to adopt, foster, or donate

Wednesday, August 26, 2026, is National Dog Day, a day set aside to celebrate the special place dogs hold in the lives of people while also bringing attention to dogs that are still waiting for loving homes.

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and animal advocate Colleen Paige. August 26 was chosen because it was the date Paige’s family adopted her first dog, Sheltie, when she was 10 years old. The annual observance was created not only to celebrate dogs and the companionship they provide, but also to bring attention to the many dogs in shelters and encourage people to consider adoption.

For residents of Union Springs and Bullock County, National Dog Day is a perfect opportunity to remember the dogs waiting at the Bullock County Humane Society for someone to give them a second chance.

The Bullock County Humane Society works to provide temporary shelter and find homes for stray, abandoned, and owner-surrendered pets in the community. The organization also promotes responsible pet ownership and encourages spaying and neutering.

Rural shelters such as Bullock County Humane Society can face challenges getting enough foot traffic and finding homes for all of the animals in their care. The shelter has previously noted that transportation can be arranged for approved out-of-state adopters and rescues, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, giving local dogs an opportunity to find homes beyond Bullock County.

National Dog Day does not have to mean simply giving your own dog an extra treat or belly rub—although those are certainly welcome. It can also be a chance to visit a local shelter, consider fostering, donate supplies, volunteer, or simply share information about a dog looking for a home.

For those who may be thinking about adding a four-legged member to the family, the Bullock County Humane Society has dogs and cats waiting for their chance. Potential adopters are encouraged to contact the shelter to learn more about the animals currently available and arrange a visit.

This National Dog Day, the biggest celebration a shelter dog could receive may be something much simpler than a special treat—a family to call their own.
