A fatal two-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck and an SUV occurred around 10:42 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2. The accident caused both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 82, near the 213-mile marker in Bullock County and approximately five miles east of Midway, to close.

The life of a Montgomery man, Guadalupe Hernandez-Gomez, 39, was taken when the 2005 Toyota 4Runner he was driving collided head-on with the 2020 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer driven by Rashad Antwane Peters, 35, of Fort Gaines, Ga. Hernandez-Gomez was pronounced deceased at the scene. Peters was also injured and transported to Baptist South Medical Center in Montgomery for treatment.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division, the Bullock County Sheriff’s Department, Haynes Ambulance, and Bullock County Rescue were on the scene. According to Bullock County Sheriff Raymond Rodgers, traffic was detoured on Highway 51 S. to Clayton and Eufaula. By 4:25 p.m., both lanes of traffic were no longer blocked. It took rescue workers and cleanup crews a total of seven hours to re-open the lanes. Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
