Community Cookout held for Anthony Daniels

A Community Cookout was held for Anthony Daniels, a candidate for the newly redrawn second district in Congress. The cookout, which was largely attended, was held at Adams Pecans in Union Springs, AL. Chilly’s Ice Cool band entertained the large crowd with two songs. Gerald Penn was the DJ, and John McGowan was the M/C for this lively cookout.

Bullock Security staff member arrested

On Friday, March 29, 2024, the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) Law Enforcement Services Division (LESD) arrested a security staff member at Bullock Correctional Facility. Essence Fiera Woods, was transported to the Bullock County Jail and charged with Promoting Prison Contraband III. The LESD investigation is ongoing and further charges may be pending.

Easter brunch shooting claims life of military veteran and coach

In a devastating turn of events on Easter Day, Allen Beachem, a military veteran, youth basketball coach, husband, and father, fell victim to a senseless shooting at a Salemtown restaurant. The incident left six people injured, sparking shock and grief throughout the community. “I’m pretty devastated, heartbroken. I grew up with Allen,” said Keanna Lowe, Beachem’s second cousin, who regarded him more as a brother.

Bullock County Schools Child Nutrition Program hosts another Corn Roasting Event at USES

It’s Corn! Bullock County Schools Child Nutrition Program hosted its Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP) Corn Roasting Event for the second time this school year at Union Springs Elementary School (USES). All students in grades PreK through 4th were able to enjoy fresh roasted corn thanks to this valuable program and Dady’s Roasted Corn!

Peachburg Circle Apartments holds 1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Peachburg Circle Apartments held its 1st Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Friday, March 29. New management at the Peachburg Circle Apartments, Smuteye Apartments and Midway Apartments has resulted in an increase in available activities for the children who reside in these three complexes. Janice Broaden debuted as the new manager at all three complexes in September 2023.

Bullock County Humane Society Pets of the Week

Our featured “kitties of the week” this week are Wynona and Win Win, two beautiful white/tabby mix sisters. As they are a bonded pair, we are truly trying to keep them together for the rest of their lives and looking for a home that would accommodate both sweet girls! The girls are now a year old, have been spayed, up to date on vaccinations, including rabies, and get along very well with other kitties, but they love each other immensely and would be sad if separated. Their markings are absolutely beautiful, but their personalities are what you will fall in love with.

Bullock County Art Guild Held April Meeting

The Bullock County Art Guild holds its monthly meetings on the first Thursday of every month. This month’s meeting was held on April 4th at the Josephine Arts Center in downtown Union Springs, Alabama, at 12 noon. The art guild’s president, Phillip Duvic, called the meeting to order.
