A mid-morning house fire on Chunnenuggee Avenue on Friday, February 6, caused the Union Springs Fire Department to respond, assisted by the Union Springs Police Department and the Bullock County Sheriff’s Department.

Union Springs City Council holds Safety Work Session to explore crime prevention tools

The Union Springs City Council held a public work session focused on community safety on Thursday, February 5, at 2 p.m. in the Bullock County Courthouse basement. More than 25 people attended the informative meeting, which brought together city officials, law enforcement, business leaders, and community stakeholders to discuss current safety concerns and potential solutions.

Pansies survive the freeze to welcome Red Door Theater guests

Members of the Chunnenugge Garden Club took proactive steps to protect the pansies planted in front of the Red Door Theater ahead of a deep freeze during the final week of January. In an effort to shield the flowers from the harsh winter temperatures, the beds were carefully covered with straw.

Union Springs – On Thursday, January 29, U.S. Representative Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) joined state and local officials and hundreds of community members at the first-ever Bullock County Resource Summit at Bullock County High School. The event, which was hosted by the Alabama Office of Minority Affairs, was created to provide free food, career resources, public health information, winter preparedness tools, and direct federal and state casework assistance to residents of Alabama’s 2nd District.

Season ends; history made

On February 3, the Lady Hornets ended the 2025-2026 regular season with a dominating win over the Goshen High School Lady Eagles, 52-20. They won 11 games, making a .500 team with an 11-11 season record. The highlight of the game came in the second quarter when Shadereka Cobb reached a career milestone when she snagged her 500th rebound.

Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast brings community together in Union Springs

The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was held Monday, February 2, at First United Methodist Church, with assistance from Union Springs Presbyterian Church, bringing together local leaders, clergy, and residents for a morning of fellowship, prayer, and community connection.

The breakfast and program began promptly at 7:00 a.m., with approximately 40 attendees enjoying a hearty meal that included quiche, mixed fruit, grits, bacon, and biscuits, along with coffee, water, or orange juice.

City Council approves Floodplain Ordinance, discusses public safety and community events

The City Council met on Monday, February 2, with all members present. Mayor Ron Smith presided over the meeting, joined by council members SaQuania Cooper, Lynn Jinks III, Erica Shepherd, Stan Cooks, and Tiffany King. Jasmine Streeter, Assistant City Clerk, filled in for City Clerk Terronda Hooks, who remains on maternity leave.
