Middle schoolers dive into discovery at first-ever Wehle Nature Camp

For the first time, the Wehle Nature Center hosted a three-day summer camp for middle school students from Monday, July 14, through Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The camp, Wehle Nature Explorers, was organized by the Auburn University Museum of Natural History (AUMNH) with support from the Wehle Land Conservation Center and the Bullock County Extension Office.

Smiles, supplies, and community spirit shine at Back-to-School Picnic

The 9th Annual Greenwood/Highlog Back-to-School Picnic, hosted by Shirley Reynolds, saw a fantastic turnout this year. Held in the field across from Greenwood Baptist Church in Fitzpatrick, Alabama, the event provided 400 bookbags filled with school supplies to local children, helping families prepare for the upcoming school year.

Hard work and leadership bring national honors to S.H.M.S. Beta Club

The South Highlands Middle School (S.H.M.S.) Beta Club has achieved national recognition for its outstanding accomplishments at the 2025 National Beta Convention, held from June 29 to July 3, at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Bullock County School District to host mandatory student registration drive

Union Springs, AL - The Bullock County School District will be hosting a mandatory Student Registration Drive for all students—both new and returning—in preparation for the 2025–2026 school year. The event will take place at Bullock County High School in the David Lowe Gymnasium, located at 911 Sardis Road, Union Springs, Alabama.

Registration will be held during two separate weeks: June 23 through June 27, 2025, and again from July 21 through July 25, 2025. Each day, registration hours will run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Faulk graduates with honors from Kennesaw State University

Rachel Faulk, a proud Bullock County native, recently graduated with honors from Kennesaw State University, earning a Bachelor's degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Family members present to celebrate her achievement included her father, the Reverend Dr. Stephen Faulk; her paternal grandmother, Mae Faulk; and her uncle, Union Springs City Councilman Eugene Faulk, who all attended the graduation ceremony.

Bullock County child nutrition staff attend state conference in Huntsville

As the school year draws to a close, the Bullock County Schools Child Nutrition Program was honored to attend the Alabama School Nutrition Association’s (ASNA) Annual State Conference, held this past May at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville—affectionately known as Rocket City.

Andrews earns top honors as APT Teacher of the Month

Exciting news is in the air—Union Springs Elementary’s very own Mr. Cornelius Andrews has been named Alabama Public Television’s (APT) Teacher of the Month for April 2025!

This prestigious award is part of APT’s Excellence in Education initiative that honors teachers who go above and beyond for their students. Andrews was anonymously nominated by parents of his third-grade students, who praised his passion for teaching and dedication to making sure every child understands math.

Mahone earns President’s Academic Excellence Award

The Dean’s List and President’s Academic Excellence Award for the American InterContinental University are academic recognitions for undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence in a quarter.

Erica Mahone of Midway, has earned her place on the Dean’s List as well as receiving the President’s Academic Excellence Award after maintaining a 4.0 GPA while studying for her Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice.
