Afternoon storm responsible for Highway 223 power outage

Last week was riddled with different weather patterns. The week started comfortably with highs in the low seventies and by midweek the highs were closer to the high eighties, low nineties, with a few sporadic afternoon showers. By the weekend the overnight lows were a comfortable mid-sixties with the highs reaching to the nineties.

Coach Loyal hired

Bullock County High School Football Team welcomes Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Barry Loyal. Coach Loyal has been involved in teaching and coaching for over 30 years. He has a bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Auburn University at Montgomery.

He has been Pike Road's Offensive Coordinator/QB's coach for the last three years. Coach Loyal was the Offensive Coach for the 2021 AHSAA 5A State Championship team.

Juneteenth Festival to be held at Harris Park

The 2nd Annual Juneteenth Festival will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Harris Park in Midway, AL. The festival will feature vendors, giveaways, free refreshments, activities for children including a bouncy house and game truck, adults, and senior citizens. All citizens are encouraged to attend this public event.

Area public schools have their work cut out for them after statewide exam reveals gaps in reading proficiency

Alabama’s public and public charter schools participated in a statewide test of their second and third-graders’ reading abilities. According to the results, Alabama’s second and third-graders are reading at a slightly lower level of proficiency than last year.

Summer Theatre Camp held at RDT

The Tourism Council of Bullock County is offering its annual RDT SUMMER THEATRE CAMP for children (10th year) and youth (18th year) this week at the Red Door Theatre.

Camp participants are receiving instruction in the areas of acting, voice, choreography, and musical theatre. They will hold a performance of Disney’s “The Aristocats Kids” ** on Friday afternoon, June 16, at 4 p.m. Call 334-738-8687 for ticket reservations for the performance.

Bullock County Humane Society Pet of the Week

Meet “Lona & Laurie” two extremely sweet and lovable sisters! They are almost identical in their unusual marking with the exception of Lona who has black on her head and tail, and Laurie has gray. These girls love people as much as they love each other. We are looking for an ideal home that would be interested in adopting the girls together, as they are what we call a “bonded pair” and thrive in each other's company. Both sisters have been spayed and are up to date with their rabies and FVRCP shots.
